Ingie waddled onto the ice, moving into position as goalie. She should have known better than to agree to play on the team without asking for more details. Or at least keep her mouth shut about her skill level.

She warmed up with the team, flinching when the first puck came at her, but she still managed to deflect it. By the time the game started, she was a little more confident as goalie.

The whistle blew, and everyone moved into position. It took the first period for Ingie to get her legs under her and better understand what she was supposed to do. She was far more comfortable playing wing.

The whistle blew announcing the end of the first period. Ingie skated off the ice with the rest of the team and went to the locker room, receiving high-fives from her teammates for blocking three shots. She’d been better at it than she expected, but she’d always been able to pick up a sport relatively fast. Maybe it was her superpower.

“Great job out there, everyone,” Ian said as Ingie lifted the mask on her helmet to suck down water.

Jed played on the team, too, and offered her a sports drink.

She wrinkled her nose. She preferred water to those sugary drinks. “No thanks.”

Jed chugged down half his bottle, then swiped the back of his hand across his mouth. “What’s the game plan?” he asked Ian, who was apparently coaching the team, something else he’d failed to mention.

Ian turned to her. “Are you doing okay as goalie?”

“I’m picking it up faster than I expected, but just so you all know, I haven’t played this position before. If you have someone more qualified, I’ll understand.”

“Oh, hell no,” Jed broke in. “You’re doing a fantastic job.”

Ingie narrowed her gaze at him. “Why do I get the feeling that compliment is your way of keeping me in the position?”

Jed barked out a laugh. “I can’t pull anything over on you.”

“You can’t, and you’d better remember that.”

Chuckles erupted around the room.

Ian laid out his game plan. They were ahead by one, but that could easily change, and they all knew it.

The whistle blew, and they skated onto the ice. Ingie moved into position, Jed at center. He faced off with the other team to start the period.

They fought for the puck, and Jed lost. The other team took possession and blew past him.

Ingie watched the puck move back and forth. The player shot the puck, and it rocketed straight at her. Throwing her body forward, she blocked it, sending it straight back at Jed.

Pivoting, he scooped up the puck, passed it to Ian, then raced down the ice. Ian passed it back as Jed positioned himself at the side of the net. He took a one-timer.

Score!

The team jumped in the air and whooped, Ingie included.

The game ended with them three goals ahead. Ingie skated to the bench, and Ian congratulated the team on the win.

“Who wants pizza and beer at Pulaski’s?” Jed called out above the din of the team’s celebration.
